475 Video: Sauna Uses Solitex Fronta Quattro and DA

As summer winds down, it’s time to look forward to the things that will get us through the winter ahead. When we heard Passive House Designer Sam Bargetz of LoadingDock5 was building a sauna in upstate New York, we decided to lend a hand. In this video Floris leads us through tape and membrane choices on this unique project. SOLITEX FRONTA QUATTRO taped with TESCON INVIS on the exterior provides the outward drying potential needed while allowing for the UV protection and aesthetics necessary for a cedar open-joint rainscreen. DA membrane (an exterior WRB) is used on the inside, working to retard vapor in hot humid environments – in this case, the inside of a sauna. We may have to make a return trip when the project is complete for quality assurance testing.

I noticed the sauna has a flat roof. Did you use the same membranes on the roof assembly, or how will the roof assembly be put together? Also, is the roof sloped for drainage? I am curious because I build saunas, and if it is a good detail I would like to use it

Thanks for the question, Travis. It does have a flat roof, and uses the same SOLITEX Fronta Quattro as the walls. You do want to makes sure you have a slight pitch to allow for proper drainage. Get in contact if you would like us to look over your current details. We could help find something that works for you.
